You will probably also need other documents, like school transcripts, employment records, death certificates, or the birth certificate or U.S. passport of a U.S. citizen relative who is petitioning to sponsor your immigration. In order to get your visa or green card approved, you will also need to present your passport from your own country. Apply for your passport well in advance so that you will have it upon arrival to the USA. Outside of the United States, records should be obtained from official, government sources wherever possible. Only certain sources are approved by the US State Department, and they may be found in the Foreign Affairs Manual (FAM) which is available online.
